our friend eric works at one of the surf shops on the beach. last week he told us that he was getting married to an argentinian woman after courting her for three (3!) days. passion runs high in the mexican male blood. his fiancee isn’t going to be back in sayulita until january, so he asked us to take some photos of him to send to her. brenda snapped some pretty manly ones this morning. sexy time!

i don’t think i need to say anything about this one:

now that the summer heatwave (and i’m being modest here) has passed, the weather in sayulita is just awesome. its sunny every day – just hot enough to lure you into the water – and in the evenings its nice and cool. plus the swell has been getting bigger and more consistent, which puts brenda and myself in paradise. a paradise with dengue, but a paradise nonetheless. a little bit of danger is the spice of life.

today is our three month anniversary in sayulita. its gone by in a big blur, but one thing i can say for sure is that we really like it here. as we do with every place we go, brenda and i have been casting an eye around for land where we could build an earthship. sayulita is the first place where i’ve felt that a project like this would be feasible for us – we could build one without going into huge amounts of debt, there is much less red tape with regards to zoning, and its an amazing climate to grow all kinds of food. not that we’ve made a decision one way or another – if its meant to be, the right land will show up – but it sure would be awesome to have a house here!

the other day our friend miguel showed us some land and also took us to all the gorgeous beaches in the area. there is one beach called litibu which is just stunning:

our day-to-day activities have stayed exactly the same since arrived, which means three months of beach, beach, beach. nayou is getting really comfortable in the ocean, thanks in a big part to the swimming lessons we have him enrolled in. he used to be really afraid of being on his back in the water, but now doesn’t mind it. he loves to kick his legs and do “open close” with his arms as well. he’s got a long way before he can propel himself in the water but he gets lots of style points!

this morning we said (a temporary) goodbye to our friends dmitri and heidi and their kids noah and naomi. the four of them arrived in sayulita within days of us and are pretty much doing the same thing that we are. they left for three weeks to attend a wedding in hawaii and for an ironman competition in arizona that dmitri is doing (yeah, they have it rough). nayou adores dmitri and heidi so he’s going to miss them tons, but at least we got to have one final dinner with them. we ate at  a restaurant that *might* have better burritos than burritos revolucion. it feels like blasphemy saying that… i guess we’ll just have to keep on eating them until we know!

and here are some other random cute shots of nayou.

at cafes in new zealand you can order a thing called a fluffy for yours kids, which is frothed milk in a cup. if you go to a cafe in wellington and look at the kids, pretty much every single one of them will have a fluffy in front of them. since neither of us are coffee drinkers nayou never got the chance to partake in the fun. but every now and then brenda will wake up with a burning  need for a decaf soy latte. the other day was such a morning, so we headed on down to our usual haunt to satisfy the urge. and this time around nayou got his first fluffy. did he like it? the video speaks for itself!

when we first moved to sayulita we were amazed at the number of doggies running around town. we assumed they were homeless, but over the course of our stay here we have found out that many of them have owners. i use the term owner in the loosest sense of the word, but at least there is someone keeping an eye out for them.

one of them, who happens to be brenda’s favourite beach doggie, has mange. its been getting progressively worse over the last few weeks so brenda made the executive decision to take him home. he’s been with us for three days now and he’s already doing so much better! the doggie was named “rocky” by the people at the animal clinic. thank god we didn’t have to name him or it would have been the end of his beach days! rocky is really mellow and very easy to take care of. there’s no crying, no peeing or crapping on the porch, and he’s learning not to come into the house (sort of). yet another amazing doggie that we would keep in a heartbeat if we only knew what our plans were!

other than expanding our family, things have been going great. brenda and i are getting better at surfing, and are pretty much completely addicted. when you have one of those great days where the waves are just perfect it feel so good! it makes you feel so lucky to be alive. no wonder why people travel all over the world looking for waves!

we’ve been going to be beach every day for just about three months now and it just doesn’t get old. its great for everyone because we usually run into some friends (or make some new ones!), and nayou amuses himself with all the other kids. even on the days when nayou is driving us crazy, we know we can go to the beach and it will be all ok.

one of nayou’s favourite things to do at the beach is to make a “baño”. for those of you coming at christmas – start getting your biceps in shape because you’re going to be doing a lot of digging!

and while we’re at home, nayou gets up to mischief with our neighbour’s son saul. its good to have an older kid around, especially because saul is a pretty good sharer and nayou needs a good example to follow!

halloween is a big deal in sayulita because it comes the day before the dia de los muertos and also marks the unofficial start of the tourist season. this evening there were festivities in the plaza with all kinds of costumed people running around getting hopped up on beer and refined sugar. brenda whipped up great last minute devil costumes this afternoon and we terrorised the plaza with our fearsome appearance.

it was really fun hanging out in the plaza. we’ve been here long enough that we can just go to public gatherings and find people to hang out with. i guess that’s the plus of living in such a small town.

the best costume of the evening goes to the most gigantic eight month old i have ever seen, which is saying something because mexican babies can be BIG. this dude was dressed as a mummy and sucking furiously on a lollipop. my favourite bit was his belly fat bulging through the bandages. awesome.

have a great halloween everyone!

remember how i blogged about surfing in la lancha and getting shards of rock stuck in my foot? well they’ve been stuck in there until just now, with my body slowly pushing them toward the surface. i started to get a bit of a painful bulge around the largest shard, so about ten minutes ago i used my swiss army knife to pry it out. i got the biggest shock then i yanked it out. it wasn’t a little round bit of rock – it was a huge sliver that was embedded in my heel! i’m so surprised that it didn’t hurt more while i was walking around with it for the last two weeks. eeeek. i’m glad its out now!
