nayou got his locks chopped off today and is looking very cute and boyish. the funny thing about vancouver is that so many people think he is a girl. everyone – from the bus drivers to the kids in the playground – refer to nayou as “she” and brenda and i can’t figure out why. sure he has a pretty face, but his demeanour and clothes are definitely boyish. in any case, no-one is going to be mistaking him for a girl now!

it was a gorgeous sunny sunday in vancouver today, so we had a leisurely stroll to our local cafe,  followed by a ferry ride over to north vancouver.

there is an indoor market there which has loads of things for kids, including a barber and an ikea stye ball room. nayou spent the whole day running around with other kids and came home happy and exhausted. as did brenda and myself!

we have been slack on the photo taking front, but are getting into the groove of life here. on saturday we bought a car (2003 honda crv) which we are picking up on tuesday! we thought we may be able to get away with using a car share service like we did in sydney, but unfortunately they aren’t as convenient. sydney really did get the car share thing right. having wheels opens up a whole slew of things for us, including jaunts up to the mountains, fishing lakes, and of course trips to seattle and beyond!

sayulita is a town made up of a rag-tag bunch of pirates from literally every walk of life. there are writers, artists, athletes, professors, healers, millionaire moguls, you name it. for example, our friend and neighbour risa is an accomplished surf instructor and a film maker. last week i met the guy who came up with the idea of “21 jump street” and “the a-team“. i’ve also had the opportunity to hang out with anne menke a while back. they all call sayulita home.

the upshot of having such a large amount of diversity is that trading skills becomes a way of life. i’ve traded yoga classes for massages, logo design for photo shoots and technical help for good karma. brenda, who has blossomed into a talented seamstress, has been making very cute beach dresses and the ladies in sayulita have taken notice.

one of these ladies is our friend rebecca, hair stylist extraordinaire with almost three decades of experience. she cut our hair in exchange for brenda making her a dress. nayou and i were both looking pretty feral these days, having not had our hair cut since cape town… possibly even before!

nayou really likes rebecca. and rebecca really likes nayou. its a regular love fest when those two are together.

we set up a makeshift salon in our back patio. it was very nice to have an outdoor haircut with good music and good conversation. nayou was the first to get shorn and he looks super cute. the back of his neck was getting super sweaty in the swelter of summer, but now its free and he seems much more comfortable. here he is BC (before cut):

and AC:

after that it was my turn. check out my mullet. i know this is considered hip in some parts of the world, but its not for me.

and here i am on the other side. its pretty much the same cut i had before the cut, just shorter. its so similar, in fact, that most of my friends haven’t even noticed i got a cut!

rebecca didn’t have time to get to brenda, but the men of the family are looking much more respectable now. thanks rebecca!

well, not exactly. but kind of. we’ve been trimming nayou’s bangs when it started to hang over his eyes, but all of his hair in the back was untouched from the day he was born. we made noises about cutting his hair many times but it never came to anything until today. actually, nayou was booked in for a haircut about two weeks ago but we chickened out after a friend of ours (who has a crazy curly afro) psyched us out of it by telling us how cute he looked. but sydney has turned out to be a much windier city than we expected and watching nayou having to push his hair out of the way spurred us into action. so this morning we took him into kidz lidz for his first ever proper official haircut! i realised that i had become quite attached to his long locks, but after taking these photos of his rats nest i was able to take some deep breaths and let it go.

the salon was awesome. all the seats are cars or planes, they have tvs with cartoons, and the hairdresser cape they put on nayou had thomas the tank engine printed all over it. even the tissue boxes had dora on them. nayou was hesitant to get his hair cut, but once he saw walked into the place he was more than willing. the lady who cut his hair didn’t waste any time geting into it and gave him a really nice trim very quickly. then she gave him a certificate and a balloon and we were on our way. these people have their process down pat!

in the end his cut didn’t end up being a drastic departure from what he had before. he basically got the back part trimmed and layered. but damn if he doesn’t look super cute now. brenda and i couldn’t stop fawning on the bus ride home. these photos don’t really do it justice, and i didn’t have a chance to take more as my camera is out of juice (i need to find the charger amidst the mess that is our hotel room). but you’ll have a chance to check him out soon, i promise!

see? we’re really in sydney!
