halloween is a big deal in sayulita because it comes the day before the dia de los muertos and also marks the unofficial start of the tourist season. this evening there were festivities in the plaza with all kinds of costumed people running around getting hopped up on beer and refined sugar. brenda whipped up great last minute devil costumes this afternoon and we terrorised the plaza with our fearsome appearance.

it was really fun hanging out in the plaza. we’ve been here long enough that we can just go to public gatherings and find people to hang out with. i guess that’s the plus of living in such a small town.

the best costume of the evening goes to the most gigantic eight month old i have ever seen, which is saying something because mexican babies can be BIG. this dude was dressed as a mummy and sucking furiously on a lollipop. my favourite bit was his belly fat bulging through the bandages. awesome.

have a great halloween everyone!
remember how i blogged about surfing in la lancha and getting shards of rock stuck in my foot? well they’ve been stuck in there until just now, with my body slowly pushing them toward the surface. i started to get a bit of a painful bulge around the largest shard, so about ten minutes ago i used my swiss army knife to pry it out. i got the biggest shock then i yanked it out. it wasn’t a little round bit of rock – it was a huge sliver that was embedded in my heel! i’m so surprised that it didn’t hurt more while i was walking around with it for the last two weeks. eeeek. i’m glad its out now!

about a week ago i met this guy ray from portland, oregon. as is usually the case these days, we met through our children who were playing with us in the ocean. we got to talking and i found out that ray was here to get married to his fiancee shelley. anyway, to cut a long story short, i ended up teaching five people from the wedding party a private yoga lesson at their amazing house this morning. the class went well and i loved teaching against such a stunning view.
i had no intention of charging any money, figuring a yoga class would be a nice wedding gift, but they insisted i take some money so i did. sometimes you can make a good thing bad by refusing things too adamantly, and i didn’t want that to happen. i figured the best way to spend it would be to go out to dinner at one of the nice restaurants in town. so we did. and it was awesome! nayou even sat in his high chair for most of the meal which is nothing short of a miracle.

while i’m busy snapping away with my digital cameras, brenda opts for a more analog approach, shooting pictures with her colorsplash and beloved golden half. she got her latest batch of photos developed the other day and so i figured it was high time to share some of these photos on the blog. i love the way the light leaks and other imperfections in the camera give the photos such a dreamy feel. enjoy!
here are the photos taken with the colorsplash.

and here are the ones taken with the golden half. sometimes we forget to take the lens cap off so we end up with black frames…. oops!

while running errands yesterday we stopped for a nice lunch picnic.

… in the costco parking lot. because that’s just how we roll. mwahahahaaaa.

yesterday was all about surfing. in the morning we headed out early to check out la lancha, a secluded beach about fifteen minutes from sayulita. the waves were all crazy and choppy so we got hammered by the ocean, but it was fun playing in the sand. apparently you can camp out there which would be so much fun. one of these days we’ll go back and spend a day and a night there!

i banged my left heel pretty hard on one of the rocks lurking under the water and ended up with about six small shards of rock embedded in my foot. i managed to tease three of them out with a needle and a lot of wincing, but the other three have found themselves a temporary home. i went to the doctor today to ask whether i need to get them out and he just looked at me like i was the biggest wimp in the world and said “they will come out”. ok so the shards are really small and the pain isn’t that bad, but hey, its good to be careful right?
later that day the waves at sayulita were just perfect. brenda was tired so i was lucky enough to get a nice long surf in some of the best conditions yet. it was fun to be amongst all the other surfers and feel their excitement as well. plus it was good to heal the damaged ego with some fun wave riding! i had big plans for the evening (like writing this blog entry), but i passed out with nayou while we were putting him down. actually, i was probably asleep before he was.
nayou has been an absolute joy to be around this week. not that he isn’t every other week, but this one is particularly great. he’s talking his little mouth off all the time, surprising us with new words, he’s playing really well by himself and with other kids (except for that pesky sharing thing), and is getting cheeky by tickling us back. the other day at the supermarket i watched him take a toy doll from the shelf and proceed to tickle it mercilessly for a good two minutes. and not just in the armpits either. nayou made sure to get the feet, the belly and (of course) the eyes. the best part about it is that he screams “tickle tickle tickle!” while he does it.
here is some cuteness to brighten up your day

why oh why didn’t i do this sooner? after battling with movable type for almost two years, i’ve finally made the switch to wordpress and boy oh boy am i glad i did. wordpress is a far superior blogging platform in every way that i’m surprised that movable type still even exists. if you’re ever thinking about starting a blog, then you know what i would recommend
so what happened to the old blog? you can still read it here. and i am going to see about moving the entries over to wordpress. i think i saw something about that online somewhere.
